A young lady walks into a dog grooming center holding her super cute Pomeranian “Kancho”. Kancho sits comfortably in her arms. Her owner says Kancho is 17 years old. Seventeen years old?! That is 99 years old in human age! Seeing Kancho, you would think that her owner is holding a young puppy. She is healthy, radiant, and active! And she’s also a grandmother, too.

Kancho is one of the many senior dogs that do not show signs of aging. There are other dogs who are much older. Shih Tzus usually are short-lived dogs, but this senior lady (who doesn’t look bad herself) owns three Shih Tzu’s aged 18 years old (Grandma Shih Tzu “Kot-nim”), 17 years old, (Mama Shih Tzu “Byul”) and 16 years old (just Shih Tzu “Chorong”). They are all lively and energetic as if they were still pups.

One of the oldest dogs is 24-year old (134 in human age!) Soon-dol. Soon-dol seemed to be as old as his owner. Even if he walks a bit slowly, he is healthy. The other dogs in the room seem to bow to his commanding presence.

The blood test results are in! Is it Kancho’s vegan lifestyle? Is it because the Shih Tzu’s owner defied age herself? Or is it because Soon-dol receives daily dog massages from his owner?

The blood test revealed that all the dogs have low amounts of Cortisol.

What is Cortisol? This is a hormone released by the brain when a creature is under stress. Since the levels of Cortisol for these dogs were low, this means, the dogs rarely get stressed. Now you know!
